Sited in the north east of England in the borough of Tyne and Wear, is the city of Sunderland. Originally made up of three separate but interconnected villages: South Wearside, Bishopwearsout and Monkwearmouth. South Wearside became the fishing village of Sunderland and Monkwearmouth became famous as the home of the Venerable Bede. Over [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the centuries, the three settlements gradually merged ultimately becoming the joint settlement known as Sunderland in 1835.
The whole area has [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] strong connections to industry. In the twelfth century, the settlement got a charter allowing it to engage in maritime commerce from its port. By the fourteenth century, there is evidence of shipbuilding and later centuries reveal that both glassworks and salt works formed part of the local industry. All these industries continued into later centuries with the shipbuilding industry becoming particularly important to the area. Sunderland's maritime importance was further increased as it became the main port of export for coal from Durham's coalfields with the biggest developments taking place in the nineteenth century. By the mid nineteenth century, Sunderland was the world's largest shipbuilding port.
As a result of this long history, the city and the surrounding area have some extremely interesting tourist attractions. As well as churches and buildings from much later back in history, there is a great pride [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] in the city's industrial heritage on display. There are several pieces of public artwork based on the industrial heritage that can be seen in numerous locations around the city.
As with all modern cities, the culture and nightlife in the city is excellent. There are a variety of museums and art galleries with a range of both permanent and visiting exhibitions. Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens is a good example of this. As well as excellent family-friendly exhibits, there is also a tropical rainforest complete with water features and treetop walkway. Theatre is also well catered for with the Sunderland Empire being the city's most impressive theatre. Sport is also well catered for and the city is home to the Stadium of Light and Sunderland's Premier [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] League football club.
Within easy reach of the city are the lovely beaches of Roker and Seaburn. Herrington and Hetton Lyons Country Park are nearby country parks with access to walks and fresh air. Joe's Pond and Washington Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre are ideal places for those who enjoy wildlife. Sunderland is a well connected modern city with tangible links to its illustrious past.
