Michelangelo was one of the great Italian artists of the Renaissance period. Due to his prolific output of masterpieces he was held in high regard during his lifetime, and has been ever since. Indeed, his contemporaries called him Il Divino, or the divine one. His masterpieces [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] span different art forms, and despite painting the artwork for the Sistine Chapel he believed [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] painting to be a less important art form than his preferred discipline of sculpture.
One of Michelangelo's most famous pieces of sculpture is the Pieta, which can be found in St Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. It is a truly astonishing piece of marble depicting the body of Christ after the crucifixion being held by his mother. Along with many other Renaissance artists religion was to have a huge influence in Michelangelo's work.
As famous as the Pieta is it is not Michelangelo's most well known, or highly revered, piece of sculpture. That distinction falls to his statue of David. Sculpted from marble and standing seventeen feet high, it depicts the Bible's David standing completely nude. The level of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] detail and the symbolism contained in the piece has led some scholars to declare the statue of David as Michelangelo's [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] most accomplished masterpiece. Astonishingly it was completed before he was thirty years old, in 1504.
Michelangelo started work on the statue in 1501, although [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the marble had begun to be sculpted many years before by Agostino di [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Duccio. He only got as far as beginning to sculpt the bottom of the statue, however. The work was a commissioned piece, and since a marble block of this size [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] would be extremely expensive, in 1501 Michelangelo was hired to complete the statue of David. There is no doubt that the work is entirely [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] his, as it is believed that before his involvement the sculpture had barely been started, and there [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] was certainly no detail to it.
As with any great piece of art, Michelangelo's statue of David is open to debate regarding its symbolism. It certainly highlights David's youthful beauty, which was typical of Michelangelo's work. The pose itself is relaxed, with the weight leaning on the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] right leg. The was typical in Renaissance sculpture and was influenced by classical Greek artwork. Even though the body appears to be relaxed, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] some commentators have argued that David seems to be getting ready to do battle with Goliath. He appears to [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] be looking into the distance with anxious eyes.
Most tellingly of all, there is no indication that David has yet slain the giant. David was a common subject for Renaissance art due to his symbolism of overcoming a powerful enemy to triumph over adversity. This had political connotations at the time. Previous attempts at a statue of David, for example by Donatello and Verrocchio, had included the head of the slain Goliath. Michelangelo's version, however, simply has David carrying his sling.
Michelangelo's statue of David was removed from its original position in Piazza della Signoria in 1873 and replaced with a replica. There are further replicas in existence in many museums around the world. The original is now housed in the Accademia Gallery in Florence in order to preserve the marble from any degradation. It is, quite rightly, a massive tourist attraction, and a priceless work of art.
