Bordering California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is the freshwater jewel of the Sierra region. The region over the years has built a reputation as one of the premiere vacation destinations in either state, boasting a number of recreational outlets and natural attractions that draw vacationers from across the country. Due to its location, Lake Tahoe has the advantage of providing near perfect weather conditions year round for various outdoor activities - golfing, skiing, hiking, mountain biking, etc.
The basin at Lake Tahoe generated much public appreciation during the early years of the 20th century; despite this, attempts by local congress to have the basin and surrounding land declared a park were initially unsuccessful. It was not until the mid-1950's, when the area was comprised of a few scattered vacation homes, when the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] area began to blossom due [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] to the post WWII construction and population boom sweeping the nation. Gambling facilities and the completion of major traffic arteries also played a large part in the growth of the area. A twenty year period [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] from 1960 to 1980 saw a massive increase in the local population while the number of seasonal occupants grew even higher; the region now had a reputation and was [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] attracting visitors from all over North America.
With local and seasonal occupants expanding in number, local attractions began to spring up all over the region on both the California and Nevada sides of the area. While there are numerous outlets for all manner of outdoor activities (*regardless of season) and every effort is made to accommodate the large volume of visitors to the more popular pastimes like golf or skiing, crowds and congestion at some of the more popular locations [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and activities can have a tendency to drive visitors to seek out less recognized attractions and activities. Below are some lesser known points of interest in the area.
Vikingsholm Castle
A marvel of architecture and ingenuity, this structure is the end result of the combined efforts of over 200 builders, sculptors and designers. The castle was first commissioned by Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight and was intended to be her estate with construction set to begin in 1928. Much of the exterior and interior detail was carved by hand - right down to the door hinges, much of the building is hand crafted. Adding to the uniqueness is a completely sod roof and [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the complete absence of any type of nails or conventional fasteners. For those knowledgeable regarding antiquities, the estate is completely furnished with Scandinavian furnishings and artifacts.
Cave Rock
This location came to into being during the last ice age when the west sides of the mountains were at a much higher lake elevation and as a result, a series of small caves were cut into the rock by nature over time. Today, the location has become a beautiful day facility with restrooms, fire pits, boat ramps and most of the accessories necessary for a wonderful (and rather unique) picnic experience. The views along the beach [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] are picture-esque and breathtaking so be sure to have some kind of camera with you to capture a few memories. (*note - dogs are permitted at Cave Rock but must remain leashed)
Tessie's Monster Museum
For those unfamiliar with 'Tahoe Tessie': Tahoe Tessie is a legendary sea beast who roams the waters of Lake Tahoe. According to local legend (*local Washoe and Paiute tribes in the mid-19th century are thought to be the originators of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the legend), the creature lives deep beneath the caverns of Cave Rock in an expansive underwater tunnel, seldom making its presence known to those on land. The Tessie Museum continues to sustain the legend via a series [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] of displays and information that serve to prove its existence [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] (*well, almost). As Tessie is seldom seen, there are plenty of photos on hand for those who aren't fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of Tessie in person. This museum is a perfect activity for the whole family and children will really enjoy themselves. Museum admission is free.
