If you're the parent of an elementary or middle school-aged child, you should be focusing your efforts on helping them succeed both academically and emotionally.
But how exactly do you do that?
Follow these 5 tips:
1. Get involved.
Kids take their cues from their parents, so if you're excited about science projects, book reports, and field trips, your [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] kids will be too.
Plus, spend as much time as you can helping your kids study for tests, going to parent-teacher conferences, and spending time [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] at dinner every night asking your kids what they learned that day. None of those things take a whole lot of effort, so even the busiest of parents can find the time to do it - and your kids will really appreciate it!
2. Read with [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] your kids.
You don't have to dive into War and Peace or your son's biology book; interesting books, magazines, and even the newspaper can be a great way to help your kids learn. Take turns reading to each other, and as you go, discuss the plots and the characters involved. That way, your kids will [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] learn to associate reading with fun - which will make it that much easier to get [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] them to do their school reading.
Plus, reading can help kids of any age improve their vocabulary skills!
3. Limit the time they spend in front of the TV.
Studies show that kids who watch more than 10 hours of TV every week do worse in school. If you really want kids to perform at their best, you need to make sure they watch no more than 2 hours of TV a day. And, when they do [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] have the TV turned on, make sure they're watching something appropriate.
4. Help them eliminate "what ifs".
You know [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] kinds of questions you get from your kids - "what if the other kids don't like me?", [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] "what if the test is too hard?", "what if the teacher is mean?"
"What ifs" can lead to big, lasting problems - like social anxiety and test anxiety. At the very least, using "what ifs" will make your kid nervous and a nervous kid can't do his best in school either academically or emotionally!
5. Help them solve problems.
This doesn't mean you have to solve their problems for them; it just means they know you're there to help along the way. [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] No matter what happens, your kids need to know you're on their team. They need to feel comfortable coming to your with an F on a test or to talk about a problem [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] they're having with another student. Otherwise, they may get [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] overwhelmed trying to solve the problem on their own.
